U.S. Gas Hits Record Election Day Price as Voters Weigh Fuel Costs

Americans headed to the polls with national gas near $4.15 a gallon — the highest average ever recorded on an Election Day — after a year shaped by the Iran war and a fierce debate over who owns the bill at the pump.

What the numbers show

As of Tuesday morning, AAA put the U.S. average for regular gasoline at about $4.15 a gallon. Diesel, the fuel that powers trucks and farms, sat near $6.29.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, flagged the same milestone on X. He wrote that Election Day set a new record for both fuels: about $4.12 for gasoline and $6.28 for diesel. In a follow-up, he said that in inflation-adjusted dollars today’s price is not an all-time high; that mark, he wrote, was summer 2008.

A year ago, AAA’s averages were roughly $3.04 for regular and $3.68 for diesel. According to NBC News, today’s figure is up about 46% since the start of 2026 and about 39% since the U.S. and Israel launched the Iran war on Feb. 28.

  • AAA national regular: about $4.15 (Nov. 3)
  • AAA national diesel: about $6.29
  • Year-ago regular / diesel (AAA): about $3.04 / $3.68
  • GasBuddy Election Day averages: about $4.12 / $6.28

Why prices stayed high

NBC News reports that fuel became a central midterm issue partly because prices stayed elevated for months. After Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, gas briefly topped $5, then fell below $4 by August. This year, prices rose above $4 in late March and mostly stayed there. CNBC links the surge to the Iran conflict and disrupted oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz.

How each side frames it

Democrats have tied high pump prices to Trump’s war choices and energy record. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, posting on X in late October, mocked White House claims that an affordability crisis is a “myth,” writing that grocery bills, gas prices, and rent are real for voters.

Republicans and the White House argue the Iran conflict was necessary and that their energy agenda will lower costs over time. On X, the Energy Department said President Trump restored U.S. energy leadership by lifting an LNG export freeze, restoring offshore oil and gas leasing, and ending what it called the “Green New Scam.” White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told CNBC that once the conflict ends, “gas prices will drop drastically.” Trump has also called rising fuel prices a “small price to pay” to keep Iran from a nuclear weapon, according to CNBC.

Analysts note that pump prices move with global oil markets as much as with any single White House. De Haan has said gas prices “don’t care who’s in office.”

What it means at the pump

For a typical 15-gallon fill-up, today’s AAA average is about $62, versus about $46 a year ago. Diesel users — truckers, farmers, delivery fleets — face an even sharper year-over-year jump. That pocketbook pressure is why both parties treated fuel as Election Day messaging.
