House Democrat Robert Garcia Tells Trump Allies to “Lawyer Up”

Incoming Oversight chair Robert Garcia posted a two-word warning after Democrats flipped the House, while Jeffries stresses affordability and the White House calls planned probes “sham investigations.”

A two-word warning on X

Late Tuesday night, after networks projected Democrats would take the House, Rep. Robert Garcia of California posted a blunt message on X: “LAWYER UP.”

Garcia is the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee and is expected to chair it when the new Congress meets in January 2027. Oversight is the main House panel that checks how the federal government spends money and follows the law. A subpoena is a legal order that can force people to turn over documents or testify.

The post drew millions of views. House Oversight Democrats later amplified it, naming Trump family businesses, corporate contracts, and Jeffrey Epstein associates among their concerns.

What Democrats say they will probe

According to ABC News and Axios, Democratic leaders have sketched a long January oversight list, including:

  • How the Justice Department handled Epstein-related files
  • Trump family business dealings, possibly including Jared Kushner
  • Immigration enforcement by DHS and ICE after deadly Minneapolis incidents
  • Alleged corporate corruption and no-bid contracts
  • The Iran war’s cost and lack of a congressional war vote

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, favored to become the first Black speaker of the House, told TODAY that voters “clearly don’t want us to try and get even.” He said they want Congress to make life more affordable, while also citing what he called “unprecedented corruption.” Jeffries has pointed to health care, grocery and gas prices, tariffs, and ending the Iran war as early goals, according to ABC News.

How Republicans and the White House respond

White House spokesperson Lauren Bis told Axios that President Trump is “willing to work with anyone to continue delivering victories for hardworking Americans.” She added that if Democrats “choose to pursue sham investigations and radical left policies, they are choosing to work against the American people.”

Another White House official told Axios that Democrats who “politicize” investigations “should be reminded that we still control the federal government and all of its powers.”

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, on the Polymarket All In podcast after the results, predicted “all-out partisan war.” He said Democrats would issue subpoenas and investigate Trump, his family, and Cabinet members. “We will see subpoenas. We will see investigations,” Cruz said, according to Hindustan Times.

Jeffries has not ruled impeachment in or out. He told ABC News the focus remains affordability. Rep. Jamie Raskin, expected to lead Judiciary, has called impeachment a “critical tool” used only if benefits outweigh costs.

What comes next

The new Congress begins in January 2027. Until then, Republicans still hold the House gavel. Trump retains the veto, and Democrats are not projected to hold a two-thirds majority to override it alone. Oversight hearings can start once Democratic chairs take over.
